zukan.com Inc. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Junichiro Yamade), which operates a user-contributed web encyclopedia platform, is developing an "AI Coloring App" that lets children create their own coloring pages on a tablet, along with "Coloring Encyclopedia," a companion website for collecting the generated artwork.

Generate Original Coloring Pages from Keywords

By entering keywords describing what they want to color, the AI generates an original coloring page. Until now, coloring pages were always created by adults and given to children — this app provides an entirely new experience where children can create whatever they like.

For example, entering "dinosaur bullet train" brings a dream collaboration to life for kids. GPT-4 is used to capture children's expectations from simple keywords and generate imaginative coloring pages. The app's UI is designed for children, and keywords can also be entered by voice. The difficulty level of generated pages can be adjusted to match the child's developmental stage, and we are also researching a feature where the AI suggests recommended color palettes for each coloring page.

"Coloring Encyclopedia" — A Treasury of Coloring Originals

Coloring pages created by AI and children through their curiosity will be posted to the "Coloring Encyclopedia," an official encyclopedia on zukan.com. The massive collection of coloring originals will be classified and organized by AI and human curation, and can be used within the app or printed for free. As the latest trends that only children understand gather here, parents and daycare centers will never run out of coloring page ideas.

Ensuring Safety

The AI Coloring App uses OpenAI's DALL·E 3 to prevent generation of copyrighted characters. Additionally, proprietary filtering is implemented to prevent display of content inappropriate for children, such as violent or sexual material. We are also closely following the continued evolution of DALL·E.

Nurturing Children's Rich Creativity and Curiosity

The AI Coloring App provides an unprecedented experience where children can create freely, driven by their own curiosity, through the universally accessible activity of coloring. We aim to contribute to nurturing children's rich creativity and sense of wonder.
